What Does My Grey's Ring Mean?
« on: June 10, 2009, 04:48:22 PM »

Lots of people have been asking what the ring on there African Greys leg means so i will try and put it basic easy terms...

Most normal rings look something like this...     1  ABC 08 V

1 = The number of the chick the breeder has hatched either that year or in total
ABC = The Breeders initials or letters that links o them
08 = The year the baby was hatched
V = The ring size

Some rings might look different like this - MCA 12.99

MCA =  Stands for the Aviary
12. = Is the Number bird that was bred
99 = The Year

Imported birds tend to have split rings with nothing on and so do breeding birds which also is used for sexing, a male or female depending what leg it is on!

Hope that helps  :thumbsup:

It also depends on the type of ring used.  Some people use aluminium coloured rings but I use stainless steel for greys as they tend to try and bite the ring!!  Stainless steel cannot be squashed on the leg like aluminium.  Also aluminium closed rings can be plain or coloured according to the year.
Sexing rings are usually split (most cases have the vet's details on)and a round silver type not flat metal.
Each breeder can have whatever they wish on their closed rings - I have the normal details   e.g.  24MKB09V  is an example of one for a grey.

 :nono: I personally don't agree with rings due to the problems Tai had with his. I brought his as a baby, after a short while it became apparent the closed ring was causing him problems he was walking on it and it was digging into him, :cry2:  it had to be removed by the vet. It must have been a traumatic experience he had to be sedated, the vet had to cut it off with an electric saw. had he not had a ring he wouldn't have needed this awful experience. My first Grey that i brought from a pet shop didn't have a ring.

Sounds to me as though the ring on your bird was not the correct size?  Whoever fitted his ring should have used a strong metal (s/steel) and fitted the correct size (V).  I have never known a problem with rings on my greys as I always fit the correct type at the correct age.  Ring information is invaluable when a lost bird is found as I have experienced in the past.  I have reunited a few owners with their birds when a lost one of mine has been found.

I know a breeder who refuses to put rings on any of his birds, from amazons to macaws, due to the problems which often happen. But I agree that rings do provide a lot of information, and I wish my birds had rings on so that I knew what their age was and where they came from.

Lots of people don't use rings on their aviary birds which is a shame, but most breeders I know use them.  There should never be a problem with a closed ring providing it is the correct size for the specie of bird.  I have known people blame rings for bird leg damage when it is their own fault that things happen.  If the ring is not checked regularly to see that it is moving properly then problems will occur.  Often birds get a piece of dirt, seed husk or millet stalk stuck inbetween the ring and the leg. If it goes unnoticed by the owner thewn a multitude of problems can happen!

tootsy, I do agree that rings are very useful, but just to protect the owners :) :biggrin: - when parrots are not very tame and you don't handle them often it is easy not to notice a little something stuck under the ring, unfortunately :(

Ummm yeah, but it teaches better vigilants, dont you think? if people cant see that there's a problem with the ring, then what can they see?, or rather what are they missing?

After Tai had his ring taken off i had him micro chipped so hopefully that would help if he went missing

I got given Charlies ring because the breeder didn't put it on his leg, but I'm glad, I don't like to see birds with rings on their legs... just in case something catches in it.  What is the difference between a split ring and a closed ring, Charlies was a split one, didn't know if it signifies anything in particular or is it just the choice of the breeder?

usually, a split ring is placed when the bird is already a grown-up, closed rings are put on babies.

Oscar the 'orrible has a split (silver coloured) chuncky metal ring on his right leg - 1864 FE.  Can you make sense of this code for me? I think he was an adult when I bought him from an auction about 10 years ago. At the time I guessed he may have been an avairy bird. He has never been hand tame. Thanks, Corinne

judging by his description, Oscar might be a wild caught parrot. Not sure about the ring though.
