Well its been a busy week. Casper has settled in really quickly, making lots of noises and watching our every move. Paula mentioned a few words he knew already but he has been saying more and more. I am not sure whether these are words he knows and now has chilled out enough to say them or they have been learnt here.
Casper comes out every evening for at least 4 hours. At the moment he comes out himself and he goes back in with a bribe of a piece of orange!! That been said, the greatest progress I have had is that he will now step up and have put him back in his cage on two occasions. A few days after he arrived, he started making these cheeping noises and allowed me to tickle his head. When he is like this I know he will definitely step up and I am on to a winner. Today he let me give him a tickle when he was behaving normally, so I really do think he is coming round.
He seems to favour me over the children although they are old enough to realise he is unpredictable and has to be treated with respect. He flies from his cage straight to me now which irritates my daughter who would love for him to fly to her.
I really do think he has settled well and I am not regretting for a minute, Here are a couple of photos of him!
Hi. Just admiring your lovely casper. How old is he?
I’m after adopting one. Where did you get him?
Thank you
Sharon
Hi Sharon
Thank you so much, he is a fine looking boy but there again I am biased haha. I became a member on here to learn with my ultimate aim to get a baby. I had located a local breeder but no babies available. One of the members on here (Pat) to whom I will always be grateful, suggested I get in touch with Paulawho owns the site and put my name forward to be considered as a rehomer. Shewill get in touch and send you all the paperwork by Email. Then its a case of waiting until a bird becomes available. Paula will try to match birds to owners and does a brilliant job. Once you rehome, the bird remains the property of the site to ensure its future. Paula is always available for advice as are all the members on here.
I really did my homework but have to say nothing totally prepares you for having a Grey. Obviously rehomes can have issues. I was lucky as Casper is overall very good and in fine condition. He is still nippy but is improving all the time. He quickly bonded with me which is the greatest feeling.
I don’t regret it for a moment
I can’t begin to tell you what this means to me. So happy Casper has found new home and he looks amazing!!!
I can tell he is going to have a wonderful life with
you. I love him dearly, he is such a chilled out guy. And yes he does make some really funny sounds, particularly the microwave ting and the puppy barking!!!
I decided to re-home when I realised that I was not giving him the attention he needed and to be honest, much as I love him, I could never quite get over the biting part.
In the end I decided to do what was right for Casper even though I felt gutted
Good luck and I will be watching his progress
Jenny
Hi Jenny, I am delighted to have him. He is a handful sometimes but really laid back overall. He has some more toys which after a week of been near his cage, he has tolerated. They really don’t like new things do they? He really loves his bell and swing though so have of course left them in. I love the way he leans forward and pulls on the bars to get himself swinging haha. I have wnted an African Grey for over 15 yrs and here I am!! He is quite nippy but he seems a little better. I have to say I don’t take any chances with him and guage his mood accordingly. I really feel for you, it must have been an awful decision for you. I promise you, he will be treasured and I will update you often.
Anne-Marie
Thank you Anne-Marie
Hello there Pinky,
It sounds like Casper is settling in really well with you. I too am on the re-homing list although I havent heard if I’ve been successfully accepted yet.
I cant wait to have my own African Grey and have been doing a ton of research on them in preparation although I know it will mean that someone has had to give away their precious bird.
I heard about Casper from this sites re-homing page and am so glad that he has settled in well with you. He looks really happy.
Is Casper your only bird? I intend on only keeping one bird.
I am looking forward to hearing more about Casper in the future and his antics as he settles in more with you and gets to know you better.
I need to be more patient in my wait for a bird, but I’m such an impatient little thing!!! Ha Ha!!
Well done on looking after Casper so well. He is obviously very happy with you.
Best regards Jennifer X
Hi Jennifer. Yes Casper is my only bird although I do have a large variety of animals here. I have wanted an African Grey for over 15 yrs and have seriously been pursuing the idea for about 2 yrs. Reading absolutely anything I could get my eyes on, visiting breeders and other pet owners. It was so important for it to be the absolute right idea as I didn’t want a bird to moved again if I wasn’t prepared properly.
I can’t wait to come home for my extended ( Shh work don’t know) lunch which I spend with him and then hometime when he gets to come out for a few hours wreaking havoc. He is really starting to come out of his shell as he settled in with loads of new words and noises. Have to say the microwave noise is wearing thin but smiling on through!!! The main problem is I can’t stop buying and making stuff. Some of my homemade things don’t withstand his bashings too well but I just call it the prototype and move on to phase 2.
I have just finished a parrot stand for him and will upload some more pictures of my gorgeous boy once Photobucket has finally whirred into action ! Watch this space
